Heating Across Borders: Lessons from Greece for UK Engineers

Every year, I make it a priority to return to Greece, my home country. It’s not only a chance to spend time with family, but also an opportunity to continue learning and observing how heating systems are designed and installed in different parts of Europe.

This year has been particularly interesting. I’ve seen many similarities with the systems we work on in the UK, but also some fascinating differences. The biggest contrast is the widespread use of solar thermal hot water systems, which have been a key part of Greek homes for decades. I’ve also had the opportunity to revisit oil-fired heating systems and pressure-jet burners—technology that played a major role in building my early engineering experience.

These experiences remind me that great heating engineers never stop learning. Understanding different systems, installation methods, and fault-finding approaches helps us deliver better solutions, wherever we work.

Over the coming days, I’ll be sharing more videos from Greece, highlighting the engineering behind these systems, the differences from the UK, and the practical lessons that every heating engineer can take away.

Learning never stops—and neither does the journey.
